Thomas Birthday Cake Idea

Thomas Birthday Cake Idea

As my son's 2nd birthday approached, I became increasingly nervous. Ethan had made it abundantly clear that he wanted a Thomas the Tank Engine birthday party, but I had absolutely no idea how to fashion a cake for him. I can bake cakes from scratch all day, but decorating them is another story.

So I decided to go to Hobby Lobby and look at cake pans to get some ideas. I found a generic shaped train pan made by Wilton that seemed the best way to start.

Using the mold as a base, I carved the cake down to a more "Thomas-like" figure. Then came the fun! Using icing as a glue, I covered the cake in color appropriate candies--mini M&Ms on the body, licorice for the stripes, mini Oreos for the wheels, and marshmallows for the windows and face.
It turned out so much better than I could have hoped! I was worried no one would be able to tell who it was supposed to be, but my son said it best, "Mommy! Dat my Thomas!"

It makes it all worth it.

Now to start planning for birthday #3's cake---Avatar: The last Airbender. Wish me luck! :)
