Whether you're planning an adult birthday bash or a theme birthday party for a child, you'll need to be sure you have all of the necessary supplies at the ready. Use this simple checklist to prepare for your celebration:
Invitations: Mail invitations 2-3 weeks before the event. Be sure to include the theme of the party, as well as the occasion and location. For children's parties, always remember to state what time the party will end.
Decorations: Party props are essential for setting a festive tone. Decorate in accordance with your theme (black balloons for Over the Hill
birthdays, for example), or festoon the walls with bright streamers and balloons. Remember, you'll also need tape, tacks, markers, scissors, ribbon or string, and a stepladder to hang the decorations.
Food: Foresight is key when planning your party menu. Be sure you have ample storage for the food items you purchase. Move condiments and non-essential food items to a cooler, and condense your freezer's contents to make room for ice cream and other frozen foods. If you have an icemaker, start bagging ice several days before the party so you'll have plenty on hand.
Paper Products: A good rule of thumb is two plates and three napkins per guest. Remember, your bathroom will have a lot more traffic than usual, so be sure to stock up on toilet paper.
Party Favors: Sending guests home with goodie bags of party favors is a great way to ensure a memorable party. Look for favors that are in tune with the theme of the party, or for practical items that guests can use every day.
Party Games: If there will be games and activities in the party lineup, gather all supplies well in advance.
For kids' birthday parties, be sure to have the following supplies on hand:
First aid kit
Cups with lids and straws
Fresh camera batteries
Matches or a lighter for candles
Baby wipes or wet wipes for quick clean-ups
For adult parties, the following supplies may prove to be very useful:
Flashlights with fresh batteries (for outdoor nighttime fun)
Party playlists
First aid kit
